Super Eagles’ Samuel Chukwueze’s AC Milan career isn’t over yet. New head coach Ruben Amorim said the Super Eagles winger is still part of his plans for the 2026/27 season.
Chukwueze was expected to leave the San Siro this summer after a loan at Fulham. But Amorim’s recent comments have opened the door for the 27-year-old to turn his fate around with the Rossoneri.
Last season, Chukwueze played in the Premier League on loan, scoring three goals and making four assists in 23 games for Fulham. Despite having some standout moments, the London club chose not to activate the €26 million option to make his move permanent. They sent him back to Milan for pre-season, leaving his future uncertain.
At his first pre-season press conference, Amorim made it clear that all players will get a chance to show what they can do before any decisions about leaving are made. The Portuguese coach highlighted Chukwueze’s skill in one-on-one situations as a key asset, saying those qualities are important for the style of football he wants to play.
“There are some players who weren’t here last year. Chukwueze is staying with us; we need players who can play one-on-one,” Amorim said via SempreMilan.
“Saelemaekers can play left or right; he likes to play one on one.
“Cissè and Comotto will start with us. I don’t know what will happen. We’ll find new players who weren’t here last year. If they play well and absorb my ideas, then we’ll find a place for them. Before looking outside, let’s look carefully inside.”
Amorim emphasized that Milan will make transfer decisions only after checking everything during pre-season, while also considering the club’s finances. He pointed out that Chukwueze can give the team tactical flexibility.
“Then after the pre-season we’ll decide, but always with an eye on the budget. We’ll evaluate the young players. Chukwueze has great qualities and gives us alternatives.”
Amorim also explained the type of winger he wants in his system while talking about United States international Christian Pulisic. Although he specifically mentioned Pulisic, his description fits Chukwueze’s strengths as a direct and creative attacker who can play in various positions.
“I have clear ideas about how I want to see him play. With his right foot on the left side, but also on the other side. Although I want him between the lines, not with his feet on the line. He’s well-liked at the club, and the whole team is behind him to make the most of him.”
These positive comments are a big boost for Chukwueze. He has shown he wants to stay at AC Milan despite rumors about his future. He recently turned down an offer from Turkish side Trabzonspor to fight for his position under the new manager.
Pre-season gives Chukwueze a great chance to impress Amorim before the Serie A season kicks off. AC Milan's pre-season will include a friendly against Celtic at Parkhead in Glasgow on Saturday, 25 July. After that, the team will tour Australia and Indonesia.
Milan will wrap up pre-season on Saturday, 15 August, with a match against Manchester United at the Tarczyński Arena in Wrocław. This is just a few days before the 2026/27 Serie A season starts.
For Chukwueze, these matches could be crucial. After a time of uncertainty, the Nigerian winger now has a new chance to show Amorim that he deserves to be a key part of Milan’s plans and finally realize the promise that came with his signing at the San Siro.
