Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze says Ruben Amorim’s trust and regular chances have brought back his confidence at AC Milan after a tough time at the club.
Chukwueze returned to Milan this summer after a loan at Fulham. He scored three goals and made four assists in 25 matches while on loan.
The Nigerian international had only three goals and two assists in 26 Serie A games for Milan during the 2024/25 season. But he has started well in his second time under Amorim.
The 27-year-old has played in all five of Milan’s Serie A matches this season, starting four of them, and providing two assists.
While on international duty with Nigeria, Chukwueze spoke to Footy-Africa. He said Amorim’s confidence in him has made a big difference.
“I just have to keep doing my best for the team and repay the confidence the coach has in me by playing well and helping the team,” the 60-cap Super Eagles star said.
“Every coach has his own style of play. Last season I wasn’t a regular, but this season has been different. The confidence is back, and I will hopefully keep showing what I can do,” he added.
“Playing ninety minutes means he has confidence in me, and I have to keep showing the coach reasons to keep playing me.”
The former Villarreal winger also noted the difference between his current situation and last season. He credited the Milan boss for helping him get his confidence back.
Amorim has also given Chukwueze a new tactical role, using him as a right-sided wing-back in his three-man defense. The Portuguese coach has shown faith in the Nigerian to take on this role, pointing to his mentality and character.
This tactical change has let Chukwueze mix his attacking skills with more defensive duties. His two assists have helped him become a regular in Amorim’s team.
His comeback comes after an uneven time at Milan and a loan to Fulham last season, where he played more often before going back to Italy.
Chukwueze will now aim to build on his strong start and keep his spot in Amorim’s plans when club matches resume after Nigeria’s international games.
