Court of Appeal Ruling Boosts Faith in Democracy, David Mark

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has praised the Court of Appeal’s ruling that overturned the Federal High Court’s decision to deregister the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on June 15, Peter Lifu, a judge at the Federal High Court, ordered INEC to deregister ADC and four other political parties. He said these parties did not meet the constitutional requirements to stay registered.

On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja reversed the lower court's ruling on the five parties ahead of the 2027 general elections and other upcoming polls this year.

The other parties affected are the Accord Party, Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

In a statement from his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, Mr Mark said the ruling has restored faith in Nigeria’s judiciary. He called the appellate court’s decision a win for both the ADC and Nigeria’s democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.

He stated that the court represents the last hope for the average Nigerian and serves as a guardian of democracy. “The verdict is a reassuring reminder that our judiciary can still rise above pressure and protect democracy, political pluralism, and the constitutional rights of citizens and political parties,” he said.

Mr Mark pointed out that the move to deregister ADC was a direct attack on multi-party democracy and an unfortunate attempt to undermine the constitutional rights of Nigerians to take part in politics.

He commended the justices of the appellate court for their courage, fairness, and commitment to justice. He said the ruling has boosted trust in democratic institutions.

Mr Mark encouraged ADC candidates, members, and supporters across the country to stay strong, united, and focused on the party’s goal of rescuing Nigeria through effective leadership and governance.

He noted that this legal win should inspire party members to work harder at the grassroots and strive for success in the 2027 elections.

“Our focus now shifts back to building a stronger, more united, and people-centered political platform that will provide Nigerians with a credible choice in 2027.

“We must remain committed, disciplined, and ready for the challenges ahead,” he stated.

Mr Mark reaffirmed the party’s strong dedication to democracy, the rule of law, and peaceful political engagement. He assured Nigerians of policies that would encourage unity, security, prosperity, and justice.
