D’Tigers bounce back with strong win over Cape Verde

Nigeria’s head coach, David Fizdale, says D’Tigers’ solid 100-84 win over Cape Verde was the result they needed to keep their chances of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup alive.

Nigeria went into Sunday’s important African qualifier with a record of 4-4, meaning they had to perform well to keep hopes alive for a World Cup spot in Qatar.

As the qualification campaign reached a key point, Fizdale's message to the players was clear: get that fifth win and stay in the race.

D’Tigers responded with a strong performance, showing one of their best offensive games in the qualifiers. They scored over 100 points and improved their record to 5-4.

After the game, Fizdale said the win was critical for Nigeria’s chance to move on to the World Cup. “We needed that win to stay in the fight and give ourselves a chance,” Fizdale stated.

The American coach had made it clear to his players how important it was to reach five wins before the game. He emphasized that another victory would put Nigeria close to securing qualification.

“I told the guys if we get to five wins, we are within striking distance of qualifying in the next window,” he added.

The victory came from a much-improved offensive showing, with Nigeria finally hitting their shots from three-point range after struggling in their previous two games.

Caleb Agada led the scoring with a game-high 26 points and added six assists, consistently troubling the Cape Verde defence.

Josh Okogie had a strong all-around game, finishing just short of a triple-double with 15 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds, and four steals. He combined scoring with playmaking and defensive effort.

Captain Ike Nwamu contributed 14 points, bringing valuable leadership and experience, while Efe Obogidi played well in the paint with 11 points.

For Fizdale, one of the best parts was Nigeria’s better shooting from the three-point line. After struggling in the past two games, the shots finally began to go in against Cape Verde.

“I was really happy; finally, we made 3s because we just couldn’t make shots the first two games,” Fizdale said.

This improved shooting allowed Nigeria to take control and keep their lead as Cape Verde found it hard to match the West Africans' energy and scoring.

This win means D’Tigers end the latest qualifying window with five wins and four losses, keeping them in the running for one of Africa's spots at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

More importantly, Nigeria leaves the window with fresh confidence after bouncing back with a strong performance when they needed it most.

Fizdale has reached his goal: D’Tigers have hit the five-win mark and are still in the chase for qualification. The focus now shifts to the final phase of the campaign, where Nigeria must build on this performance and aim for a World Cup ticket.
