Nigerian striker David Okereke has won the Serie B Goal of The Month award for September. His amazing 30-meter shot for Benevento against Hellas Verona was voted the best goal in the Italian second division, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The 29-year-old beat two other players for the award. They were Andrea Belotti’s bicycle kick and Licina’s finish. This came after Benevento's 3-1 win over Verona on September 11.
In the 59th minute, with the match tied at 1-1, Okereke got the ball outside the penalty area. He then struck a powerful right-footed shot into the top corner past goalkeeper Nicola Leali. Davide Lamesta scored another goal six minutes later to secure Benevento’s first league win of the season.
Okereke joined Benevento as a free agent in August. He left Cremonese and signed a deal that lasts until June 2028, with an option for one more season.
So far, the forward has scored once in four Serie B matches this season. His goal against Verona has now earned him this monthly award.
Even with his experience in European football, Okereke has not played for the senior Nigeria team yet. He was part of the Nigeria U-23 team and scored against Libya in an Olympic qualifying match in 2019.
He also got a call-up to the Super Eagles camp for a friendly against Egypt. However, he did not play in that match. Since then, the Abuja College Academy product has not represented the senior national team.
