Suspected supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State on Friday. This incident led the state government to order security agencies to look into what happened and take action against anyone involved.
The Delta State Government condemned the political violence in Effurun. They expressed concern over a viral video showing the clash. They emphasized that political rivalry should not turn into violence or intimidation.
Reports say the clash happened during an NDC campaign march. An NDC leader later claimed that the APC and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori were behind the attack.
In response, the Delta State Government, through Charles Aniagwu, the State Commissioner for Works and Public Information, stated that “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had directed the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident.”
The government also said that “every political party, candidate and supporter had the right to campaign freely and peacefully anywhere in Delta State without harassment or obstruction.”
Aniagwu added that “Governor Oborevwori has directed the security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that whoever is found to have participated in the act is made to face the full weight of the law.”
The commissioner stressed that the state government will not tolerate political violence, no matter the party involved. He stated, “political campaigns are not a licence for violence. Differences in political affiliations should not threaten the peace of communities or the safety of citizens.”
He urged supporters from both the ruling and opposition parties to follow the law. He said political competition should not turn into a fight for dominance.
Aniagwu warned that the government would not protect anyone breaking the law. He clarified that political connections cannot shield anyone from prosecution. “Political affiliation is not a shield against the law. If anybody commits an offence, the law should take its course,” he said.
He urged political leaders, candidates, youth, and community leaders to control their supporters and make sure campaign activities stay peaceful. He also encouraged security agencies to stay alert and ensure fairness for all political players.
Finally, Aniagwu stated that “no political ambition or party interest is worth the life of any Deltan.” He encouraged politicians to compete through ideas and programs instead of violence.
