The Democratic Republic of Congo is unhappy about the cancellation of its friendly match against Chile in Spain. The match was called off due to worries about the Ebola outbreak in Congo.
The game was set for June 9 in La Linea de la Concepcion, southern Spain. Local authorities decided to cancel it for public health reasons.
Juan Franco, the Mayor of La Linea de la Concepcion, said he signed a decree to stop the match. This decision came after advice from local health officials.
Franco stated that a report from the town’s health service recommended against holding the match because of possible health risks.
Meanwhile, the DR Congo national team has been training in Belgium as they prepare for their World Cup campaign. Reports show that none of the 26 players are currently based in DR Congo or came directly from the country to the training camp. Some support staff and fans might have traveled from Congo.
Patrick Muyaya, DR Congo’s Minister of Communication, reacted to the cancellation. He called the decision unfair.
During a virtual press conference with the World Health Organisation (WHO), Muyaya said the cancellation made it hard for the national team to prepare. He pointed out that the players had been training in Belgium for about three weeks.
Muyaya argued that this decision could be seen as discriminatory. The cancelled match was part of DR Congo’s plans for upcoming international competitions, including the World Cup.
