Egypt and Cape Verde kept Africa's strong start at the 2026 FIFA World Cup going on Monday. They both earned important points against top European teams in their first group matches.
Morocco kicked things off with a 1-1 draw against Brazil. Côte d’Ivoire then secured Africa's first win with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Egypt followed suit, battling Belgium to a 1-1 draw, while Cape Verde managed to hold Spain to a goalless draw.
In Group G, Egypt showed a disciplined performance to keep Belgium from winning. Midfielder Emam Ashour put the Pharaohs ahead in the 20th minute. He scored with a strong shot from outside the box, marking his first goal in 30 international games.
Egypt dominated much of the first half, creating better chances. Both Zizo and Omar Marmoush came close to scoring before halftime. After the break, Belgium improved and equalised in the 61st minute. Defender Mohamed Hany accidentally turned Thomas Meunier's cross into his own net while under pressure from substitute Romelu Lukaku.
The Pharaohs did not give up. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a key save from Brandon Mechele late in the game. Egypt held on for a hard-earned point. This result puts Egypt in a good position as they prepare for their next match against New Zealand on June 22.
Earlier, Cape Verde showed their spirit with a strong performance against European champions Spain. The small island nation, home to about half a million people, frustrated Spain with solid defending and great goalkeeping from their captain Vozinha.
Spain had many chances, with Ferran Torres hitting the crossbar and forcing Vozinha to make several saves. The 40-year-old goalkeeper also stopped shots from Pedri and other Spanish players as Cape Verde held their ground.
Spain brought on young star Lamine Yamal in the second half, hoping to break the deadlock. But Cape Verde's tough defence remained strong, helping them secure a memorable point in their first-ever World Cup match.
