Falcons grab tough win against Zambia despite playing with 10 women

Nigeria got back on track in their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title defense with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Zambia in Rabat on Saturday. This victory came after their opening loss to Malawi, and they played most of the match with only 10 players, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The ten-time African champions started strong when veteran forward Asisat Oshoala scored the only goal in the eighth minute. This early goal boosted Nigeria's chances of moving on to the knockout stages.

Things took a turn when defender Oluwatosin Demehin received a straight red card for a foul on Zambia's captain Barbra Banda. This left the Super Falcons with only 10 players.

Even with one less player, Justine Madugu’s team showed strong defense throughout the whole second half. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and Nigeria's solid defense held firm against Zambia's constant pressure to keep their slim lead and earn all three points.

This win was a much-needed response from the Super Falcons after their surprising 3-2 loss to Malawi. The coach had said that his team was ready to bounce back, and they did just that.

Next, Nigeria will focus on their last Group C match against Egypt on Wednesday. Egypt has not earned any points after losing their first two matches. A positive result in this game could help Nigeria qualify for the knockout stage as they aim for their record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
