From helping graduates find work to making payments easier for businesses, OPay’s eight-year journey shows in the daily lives of Nigerians who use its services.
At a busy market in Sokoto, a customer approaches an agent, makes a transfer, and waits for a confirmation. For Alhaji Ibrahim Alabi, moments like this are now part of his daily routine.
But behind this simple act is a larger story. Alabi, a graduate who struggled to find a job, turned to agency banking to earn a living. Today, his OPay agency at Kara Market provides him income and a way to build his future.
“I was a graduate without a job. So, with the help of this agent banking, I could be able to achieve a normal life. I was able to build up a future,” he said.
His story shows what eight years of OPay in Nigeria means beyond just technology and transactions. It represents chances for people to work, help their communities, and earn a living.
Across Nigeria, many similar stories are coming from agents, traders, and businesses that depend on OPay for their daily operations.
For Olatunde Bhadmus, an OPay agent who began using the platform in 2019, reliability has become key to his business.
“OPay supported my business in terms of the network. We don’t have a network issue that is actually giving customers that confidence in coming to my end to transact,” he said. That trust is important in a business where every successful transaction can mean another happy customer.
Chinazom Akachukwu found out about OPay through social media and later visited an OPay office to get a terminal. For her, the speed of transactions has been a big difference.
For Esther Gift Elegbede, who started using OPay in 2021 after hearing about it from a neighbour, reliability has helped her gain trust with those around her.
“Some people say they come to my shop to withdraw just because they are sure of the network stability,” she said.
But her OPay journey goes beyond just transactions. After graduating and facing unemployment, she saw agency banking as a chance and went for it. Now, she uses tools like target savings and in-app dispute resolution to manage her business.
Her experience reflects what many young Nigerians know too well. Sometimes, opportunities don’t come as a regular job. They come as a platform that provides the means to earn a living.
The impact of OPay’s services goes beyond individual agents. For businesses with multiple locations, the challenge is often more complicated. They need to collect payments efficiently, confirm transactions quickly, cut down errors, and keep track of everything in their branches.
At MedPlus, Ife Bakare, Executive Director of Strategy and Innovation, remembers that handling in-store payments, especially transfers, was tough before the company used OPay’s Smart Business Solutions.
The mix of Smart POS and transfer numbers gave MedPlus branches specific payment channels and real-time confirmations. Customers could transfer money and get confirmation, while the business could use physical receipts and its OPay dashboard to track transactions and manage refunds when needed.
For HyperCity Retail Limited, the partnership has also grown. Emmanuel Gbenga Samuel, Deputy Financial Controller, said the company started with Smart POS and transfer numbers and later added OPay till integration. He said this solution has led to faster checkouts, better efficiency, and fewer cashier mistakes. This is not just a tech upgrade. It improves the experience for everyone involved.
Monsuru A. Sulyman, Finance Business Partner at Filmhouse Group, said managing reports across different locations used to be a tough job. It required aligning sales across locations, which took a lot of time and people.
He now says the service keeps getting better.
“Why should I replace a working system? So there’s no point in trying to replace it. So the service keeps getting better day by day,” he said.
At Fatgbems Oil and Gas, the challenge was different. The company deals with a lot of cash transactions, meaning moving cash to the bank could involve extra security costs, time, and pressure. For CFO Oluwatoyin Sunmola, digital financial services brought new convenience.
“We saw convenience, we saw speed, we saw time not being wasted, we saw validity in transactions, feasibility, security, risk reductions and the likes,” he said.
His view of OPay has changed.
“I don’t want to see OPay as a payment platform alone. I see them as a platform that gives an opportunity to financial strategy. They are more or less like a strategic business partner that helps to build your business,” he said.
He points to reliability, security, flexibility, reconciliation, and customer service as key reasons for their partnership.
From Sokoto to Lagos to Port Harcourt, the stories differ, but they share a common point. People need financial services that fit their daily lives.
An agent needs a reliable network because a customer is waiting to withdraw money. A retailer needs a quick payment system because customers do not want to waste time at checkout. A finance team needs accurate records because every naira needs to be accounted for. A business handling a lot of cash wants safe and efficient ways to handle money, and someone without a job needs a chance to start earning.
For Per Stafsen, General Manager of New Garden City Hotel in Port Harcourt, OPay provided a better way to receive payments.
These are the moments where technology connects with people. They also define OPay’s eight-year journey in Nigeria.
This story is not just about an app, terminal, or payment platform. It is about the people behind the transactions. It is about the agent who found a way to secure a future, the young entrepreneur who turned a chance into a job, the customer who returns because they trust the service, the retailer who can serve customers faster, the finance team that can reconcile transactions more easily, and the business owner who can spend less time worrying about payments and more time growing the business.
For eight years, OPay has been part of that story, supporting businesses, enabling livelihoods, and helping Nigerians keep moving, one transaction at a time.
