Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has urged FIFA to raise the standard of refereeing at the ongoing World Cup. He warned that bad refereeing could hurt the game's integrity.
In a post on his verified X account on Friday, Elumelu praised the African teams in the tournament. He said they have shown the strength of African football to the world.
"Well done to all the African countries that represented our continent at the World Cup. You made Africa proud and showed the world what African football is capable of," he wrote.
While he celebrated the African teams' performances, Elumelu stressed the need for FIFA to fix the problems with officiating.
"But @FIFAWorldCup needs to improve the standard of refereeing because if poor officiating continues, it will damage the game," he said.
Elumelu congratulated all the African nations again, saying, "Congratulations once again to every African team."
