Emeka Nwokolo Aims for Title Defence After Injury Comeback

Nigerian-American boxer Emeka Nwokolo is aiming to defend his WBA-NABA super welterweight title. This comes after he returned from a year of injury with a strong win over British boxer Darren Hamilton, according to Sunday PUNCH.

Nwokolo, known as 'Lion Heart 7o7,' stopped Hamilton in the third round with a technical knockout on June 26. The fight took place at the Motor City Casino in Detroit, Michigan. This was Nwokolo's first fight since July 2025, when he last fought.

In the first round, both boxers were evenly matched. But in the second round, Nwokolo increased his aggression. He landed punches to Hamilton’s head and body, which caused Hamilton’s right eye to swell up.

At the beginning of the third round, Nwokolo wasted no time. He knocked Hamilton down twice, and the British boxer could not get up after the second knockdown. Nwokolo won the fight at 53 seconds into round 3. This victory improved his record to 17 wins and 1 loss, while Hamilton’s record fell to 16 wins and 6 losses.

“I recently returned from an injury, and I am glad I feel sharp again. I know I will be able to get a bigger juicy fight next and face a title defence or a title holder,” Nwokolo said.

The 33-year-old boxer is eager to defend his title. He said his main goal is to face a serious challenger for his belt. But he expressed frustration that many potential opponents are avoiding him.

“The next thing I would love to do is defend my belt, defend my title in the ring. My opponents are running from me and I have not gotten any challengers, but I remain in wait for them,” he stated.

Nwokolo’s comeback follows a tough time away from boxing after his last fight in July 2025. In that fight, he kept his WBA-NABA title with a unanimous decision against Jose Luis Sanchez. This match was just days after his aunt, Rita Eguogie, passed away. That win raised his record to 16 wins and 1 loss and marked his eighth straight victory. He also climbed to ninth place in the World Boxing Association’s super welterweight rankings, making him the only Nigerian in the WBA’s top 15 in the 154-pound category at that time.

Emeka is the son of Nigerian boxing legend Charles Nwokolo. He also holds titles from WBF International, UBO International, American Boxing Federation, and UBO world titles. This makes him a five-belt champion.

With his ring rust gone, Nwokolo is focused on finding a bigger fight. This fight could bring him closer to a real world title chance. His next opponent is expected to be announced soon.
