The Nigeria Premier Football League returned on Friday for the 2026/27 season. This time, there is more at stake than just the usual fight for the title, continental spots, and avoiding relegation.

A new commercial deal, a record ₦1 billion prize for the champions, four promoted clubs, and the surprises from last season have raised the excitement around Nigeria’s top league.

The season opened with a match between Shooting Stars and newly promoted Inter Lagos. Shooting Stars won 2-1 at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. The other nine matches of Matchday 1 will take place on Sunday.

Rangers International is the defending champion after beating Rivers United by just one point last season. But keeping the title will be much tougher this time.

The Enugu club has to balance its title defence with a CAF Champions League campaign. Rivers United, Shooting Stars, and Ikorodu City are also among the teams aiming for the championship.

Off the pitch, the league is entering a new phase with a three-year, $7.5 million title sponsorship deal with EuroMatch. This ends a long wait for a traditional title sponsor.

With 60 percent of the annual sponsorship money going to the clubs and a record ₦1 billion for the champions, the financial stakes are higher than ever.

But last season showed that money and past successes do not guarantee success in the NPFL. Remo Stars went from champions in 2024/25 to relegated in 2025/26. Meanwhile, Rangers turned a one-point lead over Rivers United into their ninth league title.

The big question now is whether this season will bring surprises or if one of the usual contenders will take home the bigger prize.

Rangers Face Pressure to Defend Title

Rangers finished last season with 68 points, just one ahead of Rivers United, after winning 19 out of 38 matches.

They clinched the title on the final day with a 2-1 win over Ikorodu City in Lagos, capping a great season for a club that aimed to reclaim the title.

Now, they face a different challenge. Defending champions rarely get time to relax. Every team wants to beat them, and fans expect more.

Rangers must also cope with the demands of continental football. Their CAF Champions League journey starts against AS Sobemap from Benin Republic in the early rounds.

Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has to manage his squad well to avoid injuries and fatigue that could hurt their domestic title defence. The team will also play home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta while their Enugu stadium is renovated.

Rangers will kick off their league campaign against Katsina United on Sunday.

Rivers United Aiming for More

If Rangers feel pressure, Rivers United believes they can do even better this time.

The Port Harcourt club finished second with 67 points last season, staying close to the champions until the final day.

Under coach Finidi George, Rivers United has become one of the most consistent teams in the NPFL. Their first match against Plateau United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium is a chance to make a statement.

With Rangers busy with continental matches, Rivers United could take advantage of any mistakes by the champions. But the challenge will be staying consistent across all 38 matches.

Shooting Stars Ready for More Success

Shooting Stars were one of the standout teams last season, finishing third with 60 points. The Ibadan club won 18 matches and ended six points behind Rangers, setting them up for another title push.

They kicked off the new season with a 2-1 win against newly promoted Inter Lagos at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. Lucky Emmanuel scored first in the 11th minute, finishing a low shot into the goalkeeper’s right corner.

Inter Lagos responded with their captain, Uchenna Njoku, scoring the club’s first-ever NPFL goal after a good run and a perfect pass from Adigun Damilare.

But Shooting Stars quickly regained the lead with a penalty converted by Sodiq Ibrahim just before halftime. In the second half, chances were limited, but substitute Qamar Adejoke’s effort earned another penalty. However, Adams Mustapha hit the post.

Shooting Stars held on for the win, making their coach Salisu Yusuf happy. They will next focus on the CAF Confederation Cup match against Tunisian side CS Sfaxien next week in Abeokuta.
