Enekwechi's Historic Win at Commonwealth Games

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has said he never stopped believing in himself after winning the gold medal in men’s shot put at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The 33-year-old athlete made a winning throw of 21.07m on his second-to-last attempt at Scotstoun Stadium. This victory made him the first Nigerian to win this title, taking it from defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand. Walsh had an opening throw of 21.03m but could not catch up to Enekwechi.

England’s Scott Lincoln took home the bronze with a throw of 20.99m.

After this big win, Enekwechi thanked God and reflected on his tough journey to this moment. “First of all, I thank God for this victory. I have worked extremely hard for this moment, and there were times when I even doubted myself, but I never stopped believing,” Enekwechi said.

This win was especially sweet for Enekwechi after he narrowly missed a medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, finishing in fourth place. He shared that the disappointment from that event pushed him to come back stronger for Glasgow.

“This victory means so much because it wipes away the disappointment of Birmingham. It puts me in a very good place mentally and gives me confidence for what is ahead,” he added.

Enekwechi showed his title dreams on Wednesday by leading Group B in qualifying with a throw of 20.03m. He was ahead of India’s Samardeep Singh Gill, New Zealand’s Nick Palmer, and South Africa’s Aiden Smith. Walsh topped the overall standings from Group A with 21.03m, setting up the final match.

Winning this gold medal is a big step up from the silver Enekwechi won at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. It further establishes him as one of Africa’s top field athletes, adding to his five African titles.

Now that he has the Commonwealth title, Enekwechi plans to focus on preparing for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He hopes to build on this success and aim for an Olympic medal.
