Enugu Government Warns Against Market Shutdown for APC Rally

The Enugu State Government has issued a warning about a plan by some market leaders to close major markets in the state capital on Saturday. This closure is linked to an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally supporting the re-election of Governor Peter Mbah and President Bola Tinubu.

The state government shared its concerns in a statement from the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Malachy Agbo, on Friday in Enugu.

The government emphasized that this plan goes against its efforts to boost investment and business in the state. The government does not support shutting down markets.

It added that people should freely conduct their businesses. This approach led to the end of the illegal Monday sit-at-home from June 5, 2023.

The statement also highlighted that political association is a personal right. It said participation in the Saturday rally and any future rallies should not disrupt businesses or force anyone to join.

"While the government appreciates the goodwill shown by traders across the state, it is against any attempt by market leaders to close major markets in the Enugu East Senatorial District for the rally," the statement said.

The government pointed out that this plan contradicts its goal to grow Enugu State's economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion. It also aims to make the state a top choice for investment, business, tourism, and living.

"The 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees freedom of association and assembly. Therefore, these rights must be protected during this and future rallies by any group," it stated.

"Political participation should be voluntary. No one should be denied access to markets or public spaces where they make a living."

The government urged the public, especially market leaders, to take note. It warned that there would be consequences for any actions that go against this stance.
