Enugu Sets Up Panel to Look into Community Crisis

The Enugu State Government on Thursday set up a three-man advisory panel to look into the crisis affecting Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community. This community is in the Enugu South Council Area of the state.

The panel is led by Venatus Odo, who is the former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Enugu Branch. The secretary is Helen Onyia, while Christian Obeagu, a professor, is a member of the panel.

On Tuesday, the state government suspended the community's traditional ruler, Christopher Nyia, due to his alleged role in the ongoing crisis.

While inaugurating the panel at the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs in Enugu, Charles Egumgbe, the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, stated that the committee was formed with the approval of Governor Peter Mbah. Its job is to carry out a thorough and fair investigation into the crisis.

Mr Egumgbe explained that the panel will find out both the immediate and long-term causes of the crisis. They will also look into the role of the suspended traditional ruler and others connected to the breakdown of order.

In addition, they will identify other individuals or groups involved and suggest ways to bring lasting peace to the community. He emphasized that this task is not a political matter but a serious inquiry to find the truth and bring back normalcy.

“The government is not interested in witch-hunting anybody. What matters is that the panel does its work fairly and transparently, following the principles of fair hearing,” he said.

The commissioner warned the panel members to keep their integrity intact. He stated that any attempt to influence the investigation by individuals or groups would not be accepted.

He assured the committee of the ministry's full support so they can perform their duties well. Mr Egumgbe instructed the panel to finish its investigation and submit their report within two weeks from the day they were inaugurated.

Responding for the panel, Mr Odo expressed gratitude to the state government for trusting them with this responsibility. He promised that they would perform their duties diligently, fairly, and without bias.

“We appreciate the chance to serve the state in this role. With God's help, we will fulfill this duty professionally and uncover the truth to ensure peace in the community,” he said.
