Chelsea's head coach Xabi Alonso has shown his support for Brazilian player Estevao Willian. He believes the young star will play a key part for the team this season. Alonso praised Estevao's attitude and mindset ahead of the Carabao Cup match against Leeds United.
At just 19 years old, Estevao has had to wait for his chance in the early part of the season. He has not yet started a Premier League game. But he made a strong impression when he played in Chelsea's last Carabao Cup match against Luton Town. He has also made important contributions when coming off the bench.
His most recent appearance was during Chelsea's 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday. In that match, he almost scored an equaliser. He forced Arsenal's goalkeeper David Raya to make a fantastic save.
On Wednesday, Alonso spoke about Estevao on Chelsea's website. He said that Estevao is ready for a bigger role and praised his hard work in training. "Este is ready and is training well," Alonso said. "The other day against Arsenal he had a very good impact and he had a great chance. He is fully involved and has a good attitude every day."
The Spanish coach expressed full confidence in the young player. He acknowledged that Estevao is still getting used to football in England. "I count on Este 100 per cent, because of his potential and the fact that he’s so young, he is in that process of adapting and learning quickly," Alonso said.
Alonso also mentioned that Estevao's eagerness and determination will be important for Chelsea this season. "The season is going to be long, and players that have the desire and hunger to prove and show every day they are up for the challenge is what we want, and what we want to create here in the building," he said.
"Este is part of it. He has a very good attitude and mentality to prepare for every game and be ready for the team."
