Family of Five Dies as Water Tank Crushes Home in Enugu

At least six people, including a couple and their three children, died in Enugu State on Friday when a head tank fell on their building.

The incident happened in Nenwenta, a community in Awgu Local Government Area of the state.

Residents said the tank fell because of heavy rainfall, which caused landslides in the area.

A video clip of the event showed that the tank's collapse completely crushed the building and the victims inside.

Residents mentioned that besides the couple and their children, their grandmother also died in the tragic event.

However, a four-year-old child was rescued alive from the rubble after some residents rushed to help.

A disturbing video clip showed residents removing the bodies of the victims from the wreckage.

The tragedy occurred shortly after a landslide cut off Nenwenta Community and nearby areas from the rest of Enugu State, leaving residents stranded.

Some residents said they now have to travel out of the affected areas through Abia and Imo States to reach other parts of Enugu State.

On Monday, Anthony Nwankwo, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, said the victims died because emergency responders could not get to the community quickly due to the landslide.

Mr Nwankwo, who represents Awgu South State Constituency, said the incident pushed him to raise a motion of urgent public importance in the House.

The lawmaker called on relevant authorities, including the Enugu State Ministry of Works and the National Emergency Management Agency, to quickly mobilize resources and technical support to tackle the ecological problem.

He expressed sympathy for the families who lost their loved ones and urged the government to pay ongoing attention to the affected communities until normal access and safety were fully restored.
