Two farmers and a motorcyclist were rescued in the Ohuhu community of Umuahia North Local Government Area in Abia State. They were taken by suspected kidnappers during a farm attack on Wednesday.

Reports say the incident happened near Umuawa Alaocha in Ohuhu. Two farmers from Umuezeroala Community were allegedly abducted while working on their farms close to Akpahia Community.

A community leader, Dan Nwokojie, shared that the victims were on their farms as usual when armed kidnappers attacked them and took them into the nearby forest.

According to a community source, “One Mrs Onyinyechi Ekechukwu, a middle-aged woman, and Mr Izuchukwu Okechi, about 20 years old, both from Umuezerola-Umuawa-Alaocha in Umuahia North LGA, were kidnapped yesterday, Wednesday, 10th June, 2026, at about 5:00pm at Nkpu-ala, close to the proposed site for the new Federal Housing Estate at Umuawa, along Umuahia/Uzuakoli Road in Umuahia North LGA.

“The kidnappers have called using the woman’s phone number, demanding a ransom of N10m.

“The two victims were successfully rescued from a bush not far from where they were taken. The kidnappers were said to be six Fulani herdsmen.

“After the first call for a N10m ransom, Ohuhu youths sprang into action. With machetes, clubs, and hunters’ dogs, they went into the bush shouting the names of the two victims. When the kidnappers heard the noise, they ran away, leaving the victims behind.”

In another twist, a family member arrived at the farm on a motorcycle to help carry harvested crops. He also ran into the kidnappers and was taken.

The motorcyclist was brutally attacked with machetes and suffered serious injuries before being rescued.

He was quickly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident made youths from nearby communities, including Nkwoegwu, Umuire, Umuosu, Akpahia, and others in Ohuhu, respond immediately. They gathered and started a search operation in the nearby forests to find the kidnappers.

Their quick action led to the rescue of the two farmers and the injured motorcyclist. But the suspected kidnappers managed to escape before they could be caught.

As of now, community youths, along with local leaders, have set up checkpoints and are watching major roads in Ohuhu. They are determined to find the fleeing suspects.

Hon. Anderson Akaliro, the member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, joined the efforts to gather local youths and support the ongoing search.

Residents are calling on security agencies to increase their presence in the area to ensure those behind the attack are arrested and punished.

The incident has raised security concerns, with fear spreading among the people.

On Thursday morning, Hon. Anderson Akaliro spoke on air. He said his constituency is taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He also held a security meeting in the Umuahia North area.

Iheana Uchenna Gavin, the President of the Ohuhu Welfare Union, Youth Wing, praised the “extraordinary” courage and unity shown by the youths from Umuawa, Nkwoegwu, Umuda, Umuire, and other communities during the rescue operation.

He said, “At a time when fear could have won, you chose bravery. At a time when many would have kept quiet, you chose to act.

“Your selfless efforts and determination to enter the bush to rescue innocent lives show that Ohuhu youths are a force for peace and security.

“This act of courage shows that our youths are not just leaders of tomorrow but defenders of today. When we stand together, no challenge is too big and no threat is too strong.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident. She said, “The Command was alerted to the incident on 10/06/2026 at about 10:30am. Six suspected Fulani herdsmen abducted the victims while they were returning from the farm.

“Officers from the Ohuhu Divisional Police and local vigilantes immediately went into the bush to rescue the victims.

“When the suspects saw the operatives, they fled, leaving the victims behind.

“The victims were rescued. One of them had injuries to the head and hand and was taken to the hospital. Investigation is ongoing to catch the fleeing suspects.
