Motorists and residents are worried about a broken truck and an abandoned piling rig blocking parts of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. They say these heavy vehicles could cause accidents if not removed.
The vehicles were left near Gideon Bus Stop and the Kara-Ibafo area of the expressway. This situation is particularly concerning for drivers at night.
A PUNCH Metro reporter checked the area on Saturday. They saw a hydraulic piling rig that had fallen off its lowbed trailer and was leaning toward a ditch. The rig's mast was extending toward the road.
Only a safety cone was placed near the flatbed trailer to warn drivers about the obstruction.
At Kara-Ibafo, a truck that crashed on August 24, killing at least seven people, was also abandoned by the roadside.
A local resident mentioned that the lowbed truck carrying the piling rig broke down, causing the rig to fall off the trailer.
Some drivers shared their worries with PUNCH Metro. They said the abandoned vehicles could block traffic and make drivers swerve suddenly.
Adewale, one of the motorists, said, “When you are approaching the area, you have to be very careful because you may not notice the vehicles early enough, especially at night.
“An articulated vehicle or piling rig parked close to the road without adequate warning signs can easily cause an accident. The authorities need to remove them before something serious happens.”
Another driver, Kunle Bankole, said the situation is even more dangerous for those unfamiliar with that part of the expressway.
He said, “If a driver is speeding or distracted, he may suddenly meet the obstruction and lose control. There should be proper warning signs around the vehicles until they are removed.”
A resident named Tunde said the vehicles have been there for about three weeks.
He said, “We see heavy-duty vehicles parked around here regularly. The problem is that when they break down, they sometimes remain there for days.
“We are worried because this is a busy expressway. Something should be done before an accident happens.
“It is not enough to leave a warning sign. If the vehicle is faulty and cannot be moved, the appropriate agency should arrange for it to be removed to a safer location.”
On Sunday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, did not answer calls or respond to messages sent to him at the time this report was made.
These worries come as there is a history of deadly crashes involving heavy and stationary vehicles on this expressway.
On August 24, PUNCH Metro reported that seven people died and two others were injured in a crash with three vehicles around Kara-Ibafo.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Sector Command, said this crash happened at about 12:03 am. It involved a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer, and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.
In December 2025, former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death when the vehicle carrying him hit a stationary truck on the expressway.
The FRSC blamed that crash, which killed two of Joshua’s friends, on speeding and wrongful overtaking.
