The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is now working with the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) to improve consumer protection and service standards in Nigeria's tourism sector.

The agreement was made on Tuesday when Ola Awakan, the director-general of the NTDA, visited Tunji Bello, the executive vice chairman of the FCCPC, at the commission's office in Abuja.

"The experience tourists receive upon arrival and throughout their stay determines whether they will return and whether they will recommend Nigeria to others," Mr Bello said.

"Every stakeholder must therefore play a role in creating a welcoming and efficient tourism ecosystem."

Mr Bello highlighted that tourism is a key part of Nigeria's efforts to diversify its economy. He stressed the need for better coordination among agencies that influence visitors' experiences.

He also noted that while both federal and state governments share the responsibility for tourism, the NTDA is crucial for setting standards and guiding the sector.

Mr Bello reaffirmed the FCCPC's commitment to protecting consumers within the tourism industry. This includes helping with complaints and promoting fair market practices.

Mr Awakan pointed out that tourism is one of Nigeria's underused economic resources. He added that it is vital to the Nigerian Government's economic diversification plan under the Renewed Hope programme.

The NTDA aims to improve hospitality standards, enhance tour guiding systems, and set up information desks at airports to make things better for visitors. They are also looking for more private sector involvement to ensure sustainability in tourism projects.

Mr Awakan mentioned plans to use storytelling and digital platforms to showcase Nigeria's culture. He proposed a streaming platform focused on tourism as part of this effort.

He praised the FCCPC for its role in promoting fair market practices and protecting consumer rights. He believes that closer cooperation between the two agencies will boost trust in the tourism sector.

Mr Awakan also named Mr Bello as a Nigerian Tourism Ambassador for his support in developing the sector.

Both agencies agreed to work together more closely to improve service delivery and strengthen consumer protection. They aim to position tourism as a greater contributor to economic growth and national development.
