Female driver killed in Lagos accident

A female driver has died after losing control of her car and crashing into a building at Mongoro, heading towards Ile-Zik, on one of Lagos' busiest roads.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the crash in a statement released on Sunday by Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department.

LASTMA said early investigations showed that the woman was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB. She lost control of the vehicle before it left the road and hit a building.

"The deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna (LND 162 HB), lost control of the vehicle, which then veered off the carriageway and violently crashed into a roadside building.

The force of the crash was so severe that it led to her instant death. She was the only person in the car at the time of the tragic incident," the statement said.

LASTMA reported that its personnel, who were on regular patrol nearby, quickly responded to the crash. They cordoned off the area and managed traffic to avoid congestion and further accidents.

The agency noted that while the accident caused some traffic disruption, its officers were able to restore smooth flow of vehicles in a short time.

Security officers from the Afonka Police Post, under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters, provided security during the evacuation of the scene.

Reacting to the crash, LASTMA's General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, called it a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of speeding and reckless driving.

"Every journey must be taken with care, patience, and a strong commitment to traffic rules. No destination is worth the loss of life.

Speeding is one of the main causes of deadly road traffic accidents. Drivers must always be careful, exercise restraint, and act responsibly at the wheel," he stated.

Bakare-Oki also urged drivers to check that their vehicles are safe to drive before setting out.

He advised motorists to stop using any car with mechanical issues until those problems are fixed by a professional.

The LASTMA boss expressed the agency's condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for strength to cope with the loss.
