South Africa will face Canada in the 2026 World Cup round of 32 on Sunday without midfielder Themba Zwane. FIFA rejected the appeal from the South African Football Association (SAFA) against his three-match ban. This is a big loss for Bafana Bafana just before such an important game in the country's World Cup journey.
Zwane received the ban from FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee after getting a red card in South Africa’s first group match against co-hosts Mexico. SAFA appealed the decision, saying the punishment was too harsh for what Zwane did, but FIFA did not change its mind.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we firmly believe the punishment is significantly harsher than the offence Themba is alleged to have committed,” SAFA said in a statement.
With this decision, Zwane will miss the game against Canada, serving the last match of his suspension. This is a tough situation for a team that has already shown great strength to reach this point in the competition.
At least coach Hugo Broos has some good news going into the match. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who missed the match against South Korea due to suspension, is back and should strengthen the midfield. This area has been key to Bafana Bafana’s strong performances in the group stage.
South Africa’s journey to the knockout rounds is already a historic achievement. In past World Cup appearances, including when they hosted in 2010, the team never got past the group stage. Winning against Canada on Sunday would set a new record and secure this team’s place in South African football history.
For Broos, the reason behind the team’s success is more about the bonds he has created with the players over time than about tactics.
“Between me as a coach and them as players is maybe something unique. I am the coach, but I am not just a coach. I think I am a friend of theirs. So the relationship between the players and me is very good,” the experienced Belgian said before the match against Canada.
He is confident that his players will step up again, knowing how close they are to making more history.
“I just know that the players will be ready again and try to achieve the third round. This should be even more historic. Those players are chasing those things. Those players want to prove to everyone and show that they are a good team. We will see on Sunday if we can go further,” Broos said.
Canada also made it to this stage with four points from Group B. They are seen as the favorites in Los Angeles. Jesse Marsch’s team won against Qatar 6-0 but lost 2-1 to Switzerland in their last group match. This match on Sunday will also be historic as it will be the first time a World Cup co-host plays a match outside its own country, with the game taking place in America.
