The Nigeria Premier Football League season is heading to a nail-biting finish on matchday 38. Defending champions Remo Stars and nine-time winners Enyimba find themselves unexpectedly in a tight relegation battle. This situation has left fans shocked across the country, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

What many thought would be a season focused on winning titles and qualifying for international competitions has turned into a fight for survival. Now, both teams are among those struggling to stay in the top league for the 2026/27 season.

The final day promises to be filled with tension at various venues. A small gap separates the teams fighting for safety from those facing relegation. This leaves many different outcomes still possible.

Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have already been relegated with 40 points. The last two relegation spots are still up for grabs. Enyimba, Kun Khalifat, Remo Stars, and Warri Wolves all have 46 points, sitting in 14th to 17th place. Niger Tornadoes are currently in 18th place.

Teams in the middle of the table are not safe either. Kano Pillars sit in 10th place with 48 points. Kwara United, Plateau United, and El-Kanemi Warriors follow closely behind in 11th to 13th places, all with 47 points.

The intensity of the relegation fight has sparked discussions among analysts and fans alike. Football watchers are predicting that the final matches could bring unexpected results.

Lagos journalist Toyin Ibitoye is predicting a dramatic last day. He shared strong views on the fight for survival at the bottom of the table.

Ibitoye believes the battle will come down to small details, especially the match between Enyimba and El-Kanemi Warriors, which he sees as crucial.

"One of Enyimba and El-Kanemi will go down at the end of matchday 38. Their clash in Aba is a 'win or bust' encounter. A winner takes all battle," Ibitoye told the NPFL.

He also thinks that some clubs will survive despite the pressure. He predicts wins for Niger Tornadoes, Warri Wolves, and Remo Stars in their last matches.

For Remo Stars, he expects a vital away win that will help them escape relegation after a tough season as defending champions.

Ibadan sports lawyer Jubril Mohammed has a clearer view. He believes El-Kanemi Warriors will join Bayelsa United in relegation. He also trusts that Ikorodu City will qualify for international competitions.

"El-Kanemi will go down with Bayelsa United," Mohammed told NPFL.

Medical doctor Nosa Iyagbaye, now in Canada, shared his thoughts too. He noted how unpredictable the last day could be, having followed the league closely from abroad after leaving broadcasting in Edo State.

Across many opinions, there is a common belief that clubs like Remo Stars, Enyimba, Kun Khalifat, Kwara United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Barau FC, Plateau United, and Kano Pillars are still in danger. At least two of these teams are expected to fall to the lower tier.

Iyagbaye described the final day as a critical moment for the league.

"In short, it is war that we want to witness on the 24th of May 2026 in the nation’s top football stage as the round leather object will burst across these sensitive venues," he said.

Ibitoye also commented on the competitiveness of this season, describing it as one of the toughest in recent years.

"The NPFL 25/26 season is one of the most competitive football seasons ever witnessed in world football," he concluded.

As the last matches approach, all eyes are on whether the league’s biggest teams can avoid falling or if the NPFL will end the season with one of its most dramatic relegation stories ever.
