One person suffered serious burns, and many storage tanks and items were destroyed in a fire at a diesel storage site in Ndieze Nwankwo, along Edibros Road, Uruagu, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Diesel is a flammable petroleum product. Fires at diesel storage sites can be dangerous for nearby residents and businesses, especially when these sites are close to homes.
This incident also raises worries about fire safety rules, how petroleum products are handled, and the need for quick emergency responses.
The fire, believed to be set on purpose, happened late on Sunday. It caused panic for people living nearby.
Though no one died, an eyewitness said the injured person was quickly taken to a hospital for care.
The eyewitness mentioned that the fire burned for several minutes before firefighters arrived and got it under control.
"The fire started suddenly with thick smoke covering the whole area. It burned many storage tanks that had diesel. There were some explosions too.
"It lasted for several minutes before firefighters came and worked to put it out, stopping it from spreading more.
"One person got badly burnt and was rushed to the hospital. It seems like someone set it on fire," the eyewitness added.
On Monday, Chukwudi Chiketa, who leads the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the incident in a statement. He said firefighters were sent immediately after they got the emergency call.
Chiketa said they received the call at about 5:45 pm on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
He stated, "The Anambra State Fire Service managed to control a fire at a diesel storage site in Ndieze Nwankwo, along Edibros Road, Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State. The emergency call came in around 5:45 pm on Sunday, 1st November, 2026, about a fire at storage tanks containing diesel at the site.
"Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked hard to put out the fire, stopping it from spreading. Some storage tanks were affected by the fire. It is suspected to be arson, as someone reportedly set the place on fire deliberately. The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.
"Sadly, one person was hurt in the fire and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Firefighters finished their work and left the scene at 8:58 pm the same day."
The Anambra State Fire Service urged the public to be careful in their daily activities, especially when dealing with and storing petroleum products.
"The public should also report fire emergencies quickly by calling the Fire Service to ensure a fast response and reduce loss of lives and property," the statement said.
