Flooding Threatens Homes in Lafia Community

At least 15 houses in Agwan Nungu area of Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, are in danger of collapsing after heavy flooding.

Some families have already left their homes as the situation gets worse.

Most of the affected houses are slowly giving way as floodwater washes away the soil around their bases.

A visit to the area showed that the foundations of some buildings are exposed. Parts of these structures are hanging dangerously over the eroded ground.

The flood has also taken away parts of the neighbourhood, making deep gullies about five metres deep. These gullies are big enough to swallow a whole building.

A local resident mentioned that Governor Abdullahi Sule has visited the area twice to look into the issue, but no real actions have been taken to fix it.

Ali Jeje, another resident whose house is in danger, said many families lost their possessions during the heavy rains.

Mr Jeje called on the state government to make urgent repairs to stop a possible disaster.

“The flood often comes into our houses and takes away our things. It is now threatening over 15 houses. If no steps are taken, we fear there could be a tragedy,” he said.
