Former Cambridge Professor Found Dead After Plagiarism Accusations

A former University of Cambridge professor, Jason Arday, was found dead in London on Friday. This happened just days after he resigned over plagiarism claims and inconsistencies in his career statements. He also faced what many called racially-motivated attacks.

The Metropolitan police reported that he was found unresponsive in Battersea, south London, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CNN.

Officers were called to Mr Arday’s home by the London ambulance service after 3 p.m. on Friday.

“A 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers,” a spokesperson for the Met said.

The spokesperson added that the death was “treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious.”

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Deborah Prentice, expressed sadness over the news. She said in a statement, “We are desperately saddened to hear this tragic news.”

“Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

Allegations and Pressure

Mr Arday has been at the center of the Cambridge plagiarism issue since July 2026. Allegations about plagiarism in his 2015 PhD thesis became public then. He was appointed professor of sociology of education at Cambridge in 2023 and was the youngest black professor in the university's history, a milestone that many celebrated.

However, he resigned last week after facing accusations of plagiarism and inconsistencies in his career statements. He first dealt with plagiarism claims last year regarding his PhD thesis and other academic work.

Though Mr Arday denied the allegations, scrutiny from academia and the media grew. He faced criticism over his research methods, professional behavior, and the credibility of some published findings.

Some British media reported that an analysis found over 100 passages in his PhD thesis that were similar to another thesis by Paula Zwozdiak-Myers, a student at Brunel University of London, published six years earlier.

The Times released an analysis on Wednesday claiming some of his research contained “impossible” evidence and was full of inconsistencies. Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his PhD in 2015, said the issues were likely due to “honest and reasonable error” rather than plagiarism.

Two corrections were made to papers he published in 2018 and 2020.

Mr Arday also faced criticism in other areas of his life, including sports and charity work. For example, he claimed to have raised £5 million for charities over 20 years. Critics said that amount would be surprising for someone not famous.

Along with the pressure, he faced increasing racist abuse. Cambridge said it had to screen his emails due to threats.

Mr Arday mentioned last year that he had been “threatened with a knife, physically assaulted, and spat on.” He also received rape and death threats directed at him and his family, along with corrosive substances and mutilated animals sent to his home.

Mr Arday, who held several prestigious fellowships and professorships at other universities, stated, “There have been multiple thorough investigations across several institutions as a result of the allegations, and immense scrutiny, including with an academic misconduct panel who concluded that there was no plagiarism or academic misconduct.”

In his resignation announcement, Mr Arday said, “It is with profound sadness that I write to resign, with immediate effect, from my position at the University of Cambridge and Jesus College.

“When I accepted the extraordinary honor of becoming professor of sociology at Cambridge, it was, without question, the greatest professional privilege of my life.”

He also defended his actions, saying his decision to step down “should not be interpreted as a loss of faith in scholarship.”
