The Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo, Benue State, has kept a former councillor of Awume-Icho Ward, Daniel Ujah, in custody at the Otukpo Correctional Centre. He is facing charges of assault and attempted culpable homicide.
Ujah, who is 43 years old, was brought to court by the Nigeria Police. He faces serious charges including criminal trespass, intimidation, criminal force, assault, and causing grievous hurt.
A report marked CR33/2026 was released on Thursday. This report states that the charges came after a petition from one Rebecca Adole at the Area Commander’s Office in Otukpo.
The report claimed that on August 28, 2026, Ujah entered the compound of Adole’s mother, Amina Iduh, at Akwutulo, Awume, and assaulted her.
Part of the report reads, "On 31 August, 2026 at about 1600 hours, through a petition, one Rebecca Adole ‘F’ of no 27 Pipeline Rasaki Avenue, Eupi Otukpo, came to the Area Commander’s office, the Nigeria Police, Otukpo and reported that on 28 August, 2026 at about 15:30 hours.
“While she was at home, she suddenly got a call from her uncle’s son, Isaac Iduh. He told her that when her mother, Amina Iduh, returned from the farm, a man named David Uja of Akwutulo Awume went into her mother’s compound, beat her up, and pushed her into a fire, causing injury to her bottom.
“Her clothes caught fire, and the police in Onyagede, Ohinmini LGA, took her mother to the hospital, where she is now getting treatment.”
The report also said that Ujah threatened to kill the woman and claimed nobody could stop him.
When the case was mentioned on Wednesday, Ujah pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
His lawyer, Rev. O. Simon, who stood in for P.O. Ella, asked for bail on his behalf.
But the prosecuting lawyer, Inspector Nancy Alechenu, opposed the bail request.
In her decision, the presiding magistrate, Hasia Garuba, ruled that Ujah should remain at the Otukpo Correctional Centre while awaiting further court actions.
Garuba set the next court date for September 22, 2026, for further mention.
