France Says Goodbye to Coach Deschamps After 14 Years

The French Football Federation (FFF) has paid a warm tribute to Didier Deschamps after his time as head coach of the French national team came to an end. They called him one of the greatest figures in the history of football in France.

In a heartfelt statement on its official X account, the federation celebrated Deschamps’ remarkable work with Les Bleus. His 14 years in charge brought France back to the top of world football.

“The FFF salutes and thanks the national team coach Didier Deschamps for the exceptional work accomplished at the helm of @equipedefrance since 2012,” the federation said.

Deschamps is stepping down after a long era of success, finishing what the FFF called 25 years of outstanding service to French football. He started as a famous player and later became one of the country’s most successful coaches.

Looking back on his achievements, the federation highlighted what made his leadership special during his time: “There are careers that indelibly mark the history of an institution and a country. Didier Deschamps embodied rigour, discipline, a sense of the collective, and a love for the blue jersey.”

During his time, France became one of the best teams in the world again. They won the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the 2021 UEFA Nations League, and they reached several other major finals. The federation also pointed out the steady success of Deschamps’ time in charge, with the national team being among the best in the world for all 14 years.

The FFF said his influence went beyond just winning games: “Under his leadership, for fourteen years, the French national team regained credibility, respect, and affection while remaining at the highest level worldwide.”

Deschamps leaves with a record of 185 international matches, achieving 120 wins. This shows one of the most successful coaching periods in French football history.

The federation also praised him for creating a lasting culture of excellence in the national team: “Beyond the 185 matches played and 120 victories, Didier Deschamps passed on a culture of performance and responsibility that will remain a benchmark for generations to come. He nurtured the emergence of numerous internationals, united several squads around strong values, and helped strengthen the unique bond between the French people and their national team.”

Few people have had such success with Les Bleus both on and off the field. As captain, Deschamps led France to its first FIFA World Cup title in 1998 and won the UEFA European Championship two years later. Two decades later, he returned to lead France to another World Cup victory in Russia in 2018, solidifying his place among the greatest football icons in France.

The FFF recognized this unique achievement, saying his contributions are unmatched: “Captain of the 1998 World Cup-winning team and the 2000 European Championship winners, then World Cup-winning coach twenty years later, Didier Deschamps holds a singular place in the history of French football. Few will have given as much to the blue jersey, first as a player and then as a coach.”

The federation also thanked Deschamps for his commitment away from the spotlight. They recognized the strong relationships he built within the national team and the broader French football community: “The Federation and its employees salute his availability and commitment. His imprint will remain indelible, at Clairefontaine as in the hearts of the millions of supporters and volunteers he never forgot.”
