The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra has arrested 121 drivers for 214 alleged traffic offences. This happened during their ongoing “Operation Total Compliance” in the state.
The Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, shared this information on Wednesday while the enforcement exercise took place in Awka.
Mrs Asekhauno, who represented Gloria Ezeugwu, the Officer-in-Charge of Motor Vehicle Administration, explained that the three-day operation covered the corps’ 12 zones across the country.
She said the aim of the exercise was to educate drivers about road safety rules. It also seeks to enforce these rules and reduce traffic violations that could lead to accidents.
The reported offences include overloading, not using speed limiting devices, driving without valid licences, trying to bribe marshals, dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
According to her, 27 drivers were arrested for overloading. Thirty-four were caught for not using speed limit devices. Ten drivers were stopped for not having valid driver’s licences, while four tried to bribe FRSC personnel.
Two drivers were arrested each for dangerous driving and for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“The aim of the exercise is to check drivers’ excesses, including overloading and mixed loading.
“Carrying passengers together with animals or goods is dangerous and can have serious consequences.
“Goods should not be transported alongside human beings.
“We are also focusing on drivers who do not have speed-limiting devices. Some even turn off these devices after installation to speed over the limit.
“Others drive without a valid licence or under the influence of alcohol. These offences endanger lives, and we are tackling them during this operation.
“We are using enforcement, mobile court prosecution, and public education to spread road safety messages to drivers at the grassroots level,” she stated.
The sector commander advised motorists to follow traffic rules. She urged them to use this enforcement exercise as a chance to adopt safer driving habits as the ember months approach.
She noted that road safety is a shared responsibility. Safer roads can only happen when both drivers and the FRSC do their parts.
