Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey will miss his country’s first World Cup match against Panama in Toronto after Canadian officials denied him entry.
The 32-year-old, who plays for Spanish club Villarreal, was set to travel with the team from their training camp in Boston.
Unfortunately, his visa application was turned down by Canadian authorities. This means he cannot enter Canada for the game.
According to BBC Sport on Friday, FIFA confirmed the news. They also explained that they do not get involved in immigration decisions made by the host countries.
“FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas,” the organization stated. “The host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”
Partey’s absence is a major setback for Ghana as they prepare for their Group stage opener. His experience and role in midfield are very important for the team.
The player is currently facing legal issues. He has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. These charges relate to allegations made by four women between 2020 and 2022.
He is set to go on trial next year.
Now, Ghana will have to make changes to their midfield strategy as they get ready for the match against Panama. More decisions about the squad are expected before kick-off.
