A 17-year-old girl died after being crushed by a lorry while celebrating France’s World Cup win over Morocco in Aulnoye-Aymeries, northern France. This was reported by The Sun on Friday.
The girl was among many fans celebrating in the streets when she climbed onto the side of a lorry with others. A police spokesperson said she fell onto the road and got run over by the same vehicle.
“She had climbed onto the side of a lorry, along with others, but fell onto the road. The teenager was then crushed by the same vehicle. Attempts were made to revive her, but she was declared dead at the scene soon after midnight,” the spokesperson said.
The report noted that the truck driver was arrested and will undergo tests for alcohol and drugs as police look into the incident. Three witnesses were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and signs of shock.
French authorities have opened an investigation into this tragic accident. The incident happened as hundreds of thousands celebrated France’s victory across the nation.
It has become common for fans in France to climb onto moving vehicles after big football matches, despite warnings from authorities that this is dangerous. Authorities had expected violence like what happened after Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League win in May, when many were arrested.
But police said the celebrations were mostly peaceful this time. Just 10 arrests were made in Paris, with fewer incidents reported elsewhere. France reached the World Cup semi-finals after beating Morocco 2-0 on Thursday, leading to celebrations all over the country.
