Governor Uba Sani has freed 27 inmates in correctional facilities across Kaduna State. This is to celebrate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary. The aim is to give deserving inmates a chance to rebuild their lives.
A statement from the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, on Friday said this clemency brings the total number of freed inmates to over 500 since the Governor took office.
Maiyaki shared that this action includes releasing eligible inmates and paying fines and compensation. The total amount spent since 2023 is over N300 million for victims.
The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir James Kanyip, said this latest release is part of the Governor’s effort to show mercy to deserving inmates during national celebrations. He said the Governor has done this on occasions like New Year’s Day, Democracy Day, and Independence Day.
Kanyip explained that the clemency is given through proper processes. They consider accountability, rehabilitation, and the responsibilities that come with freedom. He said the freed inmates are expected to return to society with a stronger sense of responsibility and awareness of their duties to others.
The statement mentioned that paying fines and compensation is meant to add a restorative justice aspect to the clemency. This helps remove obstacles to releasing deserving inmates while also considering victims’ interests.
It said the actions are based on the belief that public safety, human dignity, rehabilitation, and the chance for redemption should be part of justice. The statement emphasized that clemency is not just about releasing inmates. It also allows them to reconnect with their families and communities.
Additionally, the administration will keep supporting rehabilitation, reconciliation, and helping deserving inmates reintegrate into society. According to the statement, the government is dedicated to a justice system that protects the public, respects victims’ rights, and gives deserving people a chance to become responsible and productive members of their communities.
