A former chairman of Gombe State Sports Commission, Mallam Farouk Yarma, said that playing high-profile friendly matches will help Coach Eric Chelle rebuild the Super Eagles.
The three-time African champions played a 2-2 draw with Poland on Wednesday in Warsaw. They are also preparing for another friendly match with Portugal on June 10 in Leiria.
Speaking with Daily Trust yesterday, Yarma, who owns FC Yarmalight and was once the Commissioner of Youth Empowerment in Gombe State, praised the Super Eagles’ performance against Poland.
“The Super Eagles gave a good account of themselves against Poland. They deserved the win but their hosts also fought so hard to avoid defeat in front of their home fans.
“I urge the players to keep up the momentum against Portugal. They should remember that some of the mistakes they made against Poland won’t be left unpunished by the star-studded Portuguese national team,” Yarma said.
The politician and youth advocate also praised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for listening to calls for better international friendly matches for the Super Eagles.
He said that besides improving Nigeria's image in the football world, winning Grade A friendly matches would also raise the Super Eagles’ FIFA ranking.
“Chelle needs these top friendly matches to test the new players he is scouting around the world,” he concluded.
