As the 2026 FIFA World Cup starts in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be watching from the sidelines. They are among the highest-ranked teams not taking part in the tournament.

The latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking came out on Thursday, placing Nigeria at 26th in the world. This makes the Super Eagles the second-highest-ranked team that will miss the expanded 48-team World Cup.

Only Denmark, ranked 21st globally, is higher than Nigeria among teams that did not qualify for football’s biggest event.

This ranking shows the disappointment of Nigeria’s absence from the tournament. The team has been improving under coach Éric Chelle and has seen a rise in rankings over the past year.

The Super Eagles kept their 26th position after a mixed bag of recent results. Nigeria won the Unity Cup invitational tournament in London, beating Zimbabwe 2-0. They also thrashed Jamaica 3-0 in the final.

The three-time African champions also managed a 2-2 draw against Poland in Warsaw. But they faced a narrow 2-1 loss to Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday.

Even though they are not going to the World Cup, Nigeria is still Africa’s third-highest-ranked team. They are behind Morocco and Senegal.

Morocco, ranked seventh in the world, leads Africa, while Senegal holds the second position. Algeria and Egypt round out the top five teams in Africa.

Nigeria’s ranking is especially important as it marks the country’s highest FIFA position in almost ten years. The Super Eagles climbed to 26th after finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

During that AFCON, Nigeria rose 12 places globally. They beat several strong African teams, which helped restore their status among the continent’s best.

Sadly, this improvement came too late to save them from a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign. This left one of Africa’s most successful football nations out of the global competition.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify is one of the biggest surprises ahead of the tournament. This is especially true given their history; the Super Eagles have played in six previous World Cups and reached the Round of 16 three times.

While Nigeria misses out, defending champions Argentina will come into the tournament as the world’s top-ranked team. The world champions reclaimed the top spot in the latest rankings, ahead of Spain, France, England, and Portugal.

Brazil is sixth, followed by Morocco, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, completing the top 10.

As the World Cup kicks off, the FIFA rankings remind us of what could have been for Nigeria. They are ranked among the world’s top 30 and in Africa’s top three, yet they will not be on the biggest stage of all.

The next FIFA World Ranking will be released on 20 July, a day after the World Cup final.
