Martinez defends Argentina after World Cup backlash

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has hit back at the criticism aimed at Argentina after their controversial run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He said there is "no real reason" for anyone to dislike the national team.

Martinez called the criticism an unfair attack on Argentina. "An anti-Argentina campaign? I'm a little annoyed because they have no real reason to hate us!" he told Foot Mercato on Monday.

He added, "They say we are arrogant, but that says more about them than about us. We have always been very respectful towards every opponent we have faced."

His comments came as Argentina's World Cup journey faced more trouble. This included a FIFA investigation into a Falklands/Malvinas banner that appeared during the team’s semi-final celebrations.

Martinez had earlier responded to the backlash after the final loss. He wrote on social media, "the fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre," which stirred more reactions.

Despite the backlash, the Manchester United centre-back stood firm. He believes Argentina's players have shown respect to their opponents, arguing that the controversy has painted an unfair picture of the team.
