The High Performance Centre and Sports Leadership Hub (HPCSLH) has made a deal with Ibori Golf and Country Club to host the WAGR-sanctioned SUN Amateur Open for several years.

The tournament will take place from January 7 to 9, 2027. It aims to boost the global visibility of Nigerian amateur golfers.

Ibori Golf and Country Club was represented by captain Alex Joe and treasurer Sunny Okorie. The HPCSLH team included Bob Olukoya, Joanne Macrae, and Kolawole Oyekunle.

Joe said this agreement shows the club's goal to host international tournaments and promote tourism in Delta State. He also stated that the club would keep the course in top shape for the competition. Joe believes golfers from categories one, two, and juniors will take part.

“We are expecting a full house,” Joe said.

After checking the course and facilities, Olukoya spoke for HPCSLH. He was happy with the preparations and the state of the facilities.

Olukoya pointed out that only one Nigerian golfer, Olalekan Ogunbameru, was on the WAGR at the time. Ogunbameru earned his spot by winning the last SUN Open at Ibadan Golf Club in January 2026.

“Nigeria is a great amateur golfing nation and ought to have multiple entries on WAGR listings, just like South Africa and Zimbabwe,” Olukoya said.

HPCSLH said this partnership is part of its larger goal to create chances for Nigerian amateur golfers to compete internationally and earn ranking points.

The organisation also confirmed its aim to develop junior golfers and create a path for them to compete at the highest levels of amateur golf worldwide.
