Nigerian content creator and entrepreneur, Amarachi Amusi, known as Ashmusy, talks about her new interest in padel, her past support for Chelsea, her admiration for Super Falcons player Rashidat Ajibade, and more in this chat with Temitayo Oshikoya.

I’m not really into sports. Recently, I fell in love with padel and I have been playing mostly padel and some tennis, but I know more about padel. That is the only sport that interests me right now.

I will choose padel. That is the only sport I know well. I can play it. I know I can succeed. Whatever I focus on, I will achieve. I am a go-getter for sure.

I used to be a football fan. I supported Chelsea, but after some time, I lost interest. I started focusing on other things.

Rashidat Ajibade is one of those things. She has worked hard and made many sacrifices. She is a female athlete making waves in a male-dominated sport. It is not easy for a woman to go against the odds and get recognition in that space. She is doing great. She is disciplined and a good leader, so I am proud of her and I admire her.

I believe women who excel in male-dominated fields should be recognized for their efforts. Rashidat has worked hard, made sacrifices, and shown discipline and leadership. I admire her success despite the challenges women face in such fields. She deserves more recognition.

Of course, many athletes are not well-known outside their sports or among fans. But someone can perform so well that they gain global fame. Athletes can build personal brands that help people know and appreciate their work. They can use social media to reach more people and gain the respect they deserve.

For instance, look at Anthony Joshua. I am not saying he is like everyone, but see how he has built his brand in boxing. He is known all over the world. Even a child might have heard the name Anthony Joshua. I think athletes can also do that. They can use social media to become widely known for their achievements.

I was on holiday in Japan when someone first reached out to me about a celebrity boxing show. Phyna later contacted me about it and encouraged me to join. I was unsure at first. Sometimes, during our chats, I would say, "Okay, I’m in," and move on with my day. I never signed the contract. At one point, I asked one of the organizers if I could pick another opponent because I wasn’t sure about fighting Phyna. I was told I could find someone who matched me physically.

I didn’t realize that changing my opponent would affect Phyna’s chance to fight. I thought there could be multiple boxing matches in one event. Everything was happening quickly because I was busy traveling. I was just going with the flow without understanding everything. When I came back and saw how things had unfolded, I understood my mistake.

I took full responsibility and apologized to Phyna because I had to own up to my part in the situation. I could see why she felt hurt. You trust someone, and they seem to betray that trust. That is how it looked. I didn’t mean to betray Phyna. I was guided by someone from the company, but I still had to take responsibility and apologize.

It hurt me because people were bashing me online and saying all sorts. I tried to reach out to the organizers and Phyna to resolve things. Eventually, I removed that person from the situation and began to see things clearly. I took full responsibility and apologized to Phyna because I realized my mistake.

We talked and sort of made up. We are all cool now, but online, I am still seen as the villain. For me, I learned a lesson from this. I have to be careful and deliberate about my choices.

No, I would not consider doing it again. I am not interested in it at all.

Things have not really changed. But I have learned my lesson. I will be more careful and plan better. I need to keep things more confidential, especially.

I have learned to be more cautious. I will plan better, organize better, and keep things private. Sometimes, when busy, things can happen quickly and you can just go along with it. I think I have learned to be more careful and understand situations before making decisions.
