The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is looking into some strange photographs in the preliminary voter register. Some of these photos are believed to be generated by AI. This register was published on INEC's website recently.

INEC's spokesperson, Mohammed Haruna, said the commission noticed some questionable registration records during a physical display of the preliminary register. This display took place across the country from 9 to 15 October.

The commission has started to review these records and is taking steps to fix any issues. This statement came after people raised concerns and shared reports on social media about the possible AI-generated photos in the register that was published online on 26 October.

INEC explained that the online register is the same as the preliminary register shown physically during the Display, Claims and Objections exercise. They added that the online version does not show all the data-cleanup activities currently happening.

"The commission is also examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings," the statement said.

INEC made it clear that the preliminary register is not the final certified register. The display exercise helps people check the records, find mistakes, and make corrections before the final certification.

The commission thanked citizens and stakeholders who reported the suspected irregularities. They said public scrutiny is crucial for making the voter register more accurate and trustworthy.

INEC assured Nigerians that any verified irregularities would be dealt with according to the right procedures. They promised to give more updates as the review moves forward.

They said the process of verification, decision-making, and data-cleanup will be finished before the final register of voters is certified on 15 December 2026.

Publishing the preliminary register is part of INEC's plans for the 2027 general election. This exercise allows registered voters and other stakeholders to check the records and report any mistakes or questionable entries before the commission certifies the final register.
