Iran fought back twice to earn a 2-2 draw against New Zealand on Monday in their first match of the World Cup. This tournament has been clouded by war, politics, and protests.
The Iranian team’s chance to even play in Los Angeles was uncertain after months of conflict between Iran and the United States.
Once the game started, the Iran players found themselves down twice to the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, thanks to New Zealand striker Elijah Just.
But the crowd was mostly pro-Iran, which drowned out the planned protests by those against the government. Goals from Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebi saved Team Melli from further embarrassment.
Before arriving at this World Cup, the Iran team faced many challenges. They dealt with delayed US visas and even had to move their training camp to Mexico at the last minute.
Outside the stadium on Monday, hundreds protested against Iran's ruling regime. They claimed the team does not represent the people.
Many inside the stadium wore anti-government symbols, ignoring FIFA's rules against political messages. The Iran anthem got mixed reactions of boos and cheers.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei said before the game that his players would not focus on the hype around them.
But they were shocked by an early goal from New Zealand, created by veteran striker Chris Wood. In the seventh minute, Wood collected a long pass, held up the ball, and set up Elijah Just.
After a quick exchange of passes with Sarpreet Singh and Wood, Just jumped and volleyed the ball into the net.
Iran’s star forward Mehdi Taremi came close to equalizing in the 23rd minute. His long-range shot hit the right post.
They almost scored again when Kiwi keeper Max Crocombe was tackled outside his box. He could only watch as a lobbed shot missed the open goal.
Iran equalized in the 32nd minute with a clever finish from wingback Rezaeian. He pounced on a rebound after Saman Ghoddos passed to Shahriyar Moghanlou. Moghanlou's shot was blocked by Finn Surman.
Ali Nemati thought he had scored just before halftime, but his header from a free kick was ruled offside.
New Zealand regained the lead in the 55th minute. Just scored again after a quick one-two with Wood, following a steal by Liberato Cacace on the halfway line.
But nine minutes later, Mohebi's header from Rezaeian's perfect cross glanced off the inside post to equalize again.
In the last half hour, Iran pressed hard for a winner but could not convert due to poor finishing and solid defending from New Zealand.
This draw hurts Iran's chances of making it past the group stage for the first time, though Egypt and Belgium also drew in their match on Monday.
New Zealand still waits for their first World Cup win.
