Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi has brought home the country’s 10th gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He ran a fantastic race to win the men’s 400 metres title in 44.25 seconds.
The national record holder lived up to expectations as one of the favorites. He pulled ahead of his competitors in the last moments, ending a remarkable championship for the 20-year-old.
Jereem Richards took the silver medal with a time of 44.82 seconds. Zakithi Nene from South Africa won the bronze in 45.21 seconds.
Ogazi’s win caps off a strong campaign that started with a powerful first-round performance. He made history in the semi-finals by running 44.52 seconds, the fastest men’s 400m semi-final ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games.
His gold medal also shows Nigeria’s impressive comeback in athletics. This comes after Ezekiel Nathaniel won the men’s 400m hurdles title on Friday, becoming the first Nigerian man to win gold in that event at the Commonwealth Games.
With this latest gold, Team Nigeria strengthens its position as Africa’s top-ranked nation on the Glasgow 2026 medals table.
Before Ogazi’s victory, the athletics team had already won medals. Ezekiel Nathaniel claimed gold in the 400m hurdles, Udodi Onwuzurike took silver in the 200m, and Jessica Oji earned silver in shot put. Kayinsola Ajayi won bronze in the 100m, Temitope Adeshina got bronze in high jump, Tobi Amusan secured bronze in the 100m hurdles, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won gold in shot put.
Nigeria has also achieved gold medals in other sports. These medals came from Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, Rilwan Idris, Edidiong Umoafia, Onome Didih, Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, and Goodness Nwachukwu. This highlights the country’s strength in various sports.
