Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman scored two goals as Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2 at Portman Road on Tuesday. This victory took Arsenal into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Dowman made his first competitive start of the season and opened the scoring just six minutes into the match. Noni Madueke then doubled Arsenal’s lead shortly after.
The young striker struck again just 90 seconds into the second half, putting Arsenal up 3-0. Mikel Merino added a fourth goal for the Gunners in the 56th minute.
Ipswich tried to fight back. Anis Mehmeti found the net in the 62nd minute. Former Arsenal player Chuba Akpom scored in stoppage time, but Arsenal held on to win and move to the round of 16.
Dowman’s first goal made him the third-youngest scorer in Carabao Cup history. He is 16 years and 258 days old.
Only two players have scored at a younger age in this competition. They are former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who scored at 16 years and 212 days, and Jack Wilshere, who scored at 16 years and 266 days.
His second goal put Dowman in another special group. Arsenal said he became the second 16-year-old to score twice in a game for a Premier League club in all competitions. Wayne Rooney was the first to do this for Everton in October 2002.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also gave 17-year-old Marli Salmon a starting spot alongside Gabriel in defense. Theo Julienne made his competitive debut as a substitute in the second half.
Arsenal will play again in the Premier League on Saturday. They will face Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break.
