Tottenham Hotspur has been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing 3-1 to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.
Alexis Mac Allister scored the first goal for Liverpool in the 21st minute. Cody Gakpo added another goal for the home team just nine minutes into the second half.
Tottenham got one back through Conor Gallagher in the 69th minute. This gave them some hope of tying the game.
But in the first minute of stoppage time, Dominik Szoboszlai scored again for Liverpool, restoring their two-goal lead and sending them to the fourth round.
This loss ended Tottenham's Carabao Cup journey at the third round. Liverpool, on the other hand, moved on to the next round.
Liverpool entered this round after qualifying for the Champions League. Tottenham reached the third round after a big 5-1 win over Charlton Athletic in the previous stage.
Next, Liverpool will focus on the Premier League. They will play Bournemouth on Sunday. Tottenham, meanwhile, will host Aston Villa on Saturday.
Tottenham came into this match struggling in the league. They failed to score in their first four Premier League games, earning only two points from a possible 12. This marks the longest goalless start to a league season in the club's history, according to Reuters.
Before this match, Tottenham's only win was in the Carabao Cup against Charlton, where they won 5-1 in the second round.
The bad start to the league season has put pressure on head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who took over in March. Reuters reported that De Zerbi has brought in 10 new players during the off-season. He mentioned that many of his attacking players are still adjusting to his style.
Players like Sávio, Omar Marmoush, Mohammed Kudus, Conor Gallagher, and Mathys Tel need time to adapt, according to De Zerbi. Dominic Solanke, who joined in 2024, was not part of the club's 2026 summer signings.
Tottenham also spent heavily in the summer transfer window. Sky Sports reported that they spent about £320m on seven first-team players and brought in Marmoush on loan.
Key permanent signings included Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Sávio. Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dúbravka joined on free transfers. Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk came in on loan, while Tosin Adarabioyo transferred from Chelsea.
With this defeat in the Carabao Cup, Tottenham will now focus on the Premier League. Aston Villa is their next challenge on Saturday.
