Iwobi Praises Bassey’s Leadership at Fulham

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has praised Calvin Bassey’s leadership at Fulham. He called his Nigeria teammate a strong voice who leads by example after getting the captaincy at the Premier League club, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Bassey became Fulham's captain at the start of the season due to his steady performances and growing role in the team. Iwobi said the decision surprised the players.

“In fairness, nobody saw it coming but we’re happy for him because he’s very vocal and has a big personality. Obviously, he is a good player and someone that always plays,” Iwobi told journalists.

“We are happy for him because he is such a great player and great leader. He leads by example and also talks. Nobody has any issues and in any ways we can help him as a teammate and brother, I am willing to do so.”

Relationship Remains Strong

Iwobi also mentioned that Bassey’s new role as captain has not changed their friendship. He said they still have the same bond even with Bassey taking on more responsibilities at Fulham.

“Calvin is the same person and I am still the same person. Even though he’s captain, we still have the same vibe, the same energy,” he said.

Iwobi shared his positive feelings about working with new Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa. He said the players have been responding well to the Spaniard’s tactics, even if their results haven’t reflected their efforts.

“It’s been good. Everybody has been enjoying his tactics and ideas. Unfortunately, we haven’t had the results to show,” he said.

“I am enjoying my time with him. It’s a new challenge and he’s a good manager. It just takes time with the result.”

Focus on Nigeria

Iwobi and Bassey are now focused on their national team as Nigeria starts the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar. The match will take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday (today).

Both players are part of Éric Chelle’s squad for the first qualifiers. Nigeria will also face Guinea-Bissau in their second Group L match in Bissau on September 29.
