A former England player, James Milner, has announced his retirement from professional football. This ends a career that lasted more than 20 years in the Premier League.
The 40-year-old midfielder is known for his ability to play in many positions and for being dependable. He was without a contract after spending the last three seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion.
Milner holds the record for the most games played in Premier League history. He reached this milestone earlier this year, solidifying his place as one of the league's longest-serving players.
He started his career at Leeds United before playing for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and finally Brighton. During his time in the Premier League, he made over 600 appearances and became one of the most trusted utility players in English football.
Milner had great success at Manchester City, winning two Premier League titles. He then moved to Liverpool, where he added another league title and helped the team lift the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2019.
On Monday, Milner shared a statement on social media. He looked back on his long career and the experiences he gained.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups,” he said.
“But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”
Milner also played for England in major international tournaments, including two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups. He earned respect for his professionalism, fitness, and leadership throughout his career.
His retirement marks the end of one of the Premier League's longest and most consistent careers.
