The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended Haruna Maigari, the Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council. This suspension is due to alleged actions against the All Progressives Congress that officials believe could harm the party's unity at the grassroots.

The decision was made during a meeting on Tuesday at the Assembly complex in Dutse, the state capital. This suspension comes as the party deals with the impact of recent primaries.

Reports from The PUNCH indicate that suspensions are happening across Jigawa APC following the primary elections. Many special advisers and assistants have also been suspended statewide for similar reasons related to anti-party actions.

Maigari, who is also the councillor for Auyo Ward, faced suspension after the House discussed a motion put forward by Majority Leader, Lawan Dansure. The motion called for disciplinary action against Maigari for actions seen as harmful to party unity.

While presenting the motion during the Assembly session on Tuesday, Dansure urged his colleagues to support the suspension. He stressed that the House needs to protect the ruling party’s integrity as they look ahead to 2027.

Dansure said, “His actions are detrimental to the unity, stability, and progress of the All Progressives Congress in the state.” He highlighted that such anti-party activities at the grassroots could hurt the APC's performance in future elections.

After the motion passed, the Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Dangyatin, announced the immediate suspension of the councillor. He stated that the House could not ignore the threat to party discipline.

“Hon. Haruna Maigari is hereby suspended as Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council over alleged anti-party activities,” Dangyatin declared during the plenary session. He also emphasized the House's commitment to maintaining party discipline in all areas of governance.

Dangyatin then set up a committee to investigate the issue and report back within two weeks. “The committee is expected to establish facts and recommend further action based on its findings,” he stated.

The Speaker also instructed the suspended lawmaker to hand over all official documents he holds to the Deputy Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council. He insisted that this handover must happen immediately to keep council business running smoothly.

In another matter, the House received a formal notice from Governor Umar Namadi about an official trip. “The governor is set to attend a two-day West African Rice Investment Roundtable in Accra, Ghana,” the Speaker mentioned during the Assembly session.

Dangyatin explained that the governor’s trip is scheduled for June 2 and June 3, 2026. He added that “the governor’s participation is aimed at attracting investment to Jigawa’s rice value chain.”
