The Jigawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council, Haruna Maigari. This is due to claims of anti-party activities that some officials say could threaten the unity of the All Progressives Congress at the grassroots.

The decision was made during a meeting on Tuesday at the Assembly complex in Dutse, the state capital. The party is still dealing with the impact of recent primaries.

Our reporter learned that this action follows a series of suspensions within the Jigawa APC after the primary elections took place. Several special advisers and assistants were also suspended across the state for similar reasons, from the state level down to local governments.

Maigari, who is also the councillor for Auyo Ward, was suspended after the House discussed a motion brought by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dansure. The motion called for disciplinary action against Maigari for behavior seen as harmful to the party's unity.

During the Assembly’s meeting on Tuesday, Dansure urged members to support the suspension. He said it was important for the House to protect the integrity of the ruling party as they approach the 2027 elections.

Dansure stated, “His actions are detrimental to the unity, stability, and progress of the All Progressives Congress.” He stressed that any anti-party behavior at the grassroots could hurt the APC’s chances in upcoming elections.

After the motion was passed, Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Haruna Dangyatin, announced the suspension of the councillor immediately. He said the House could not remain inactive while the party’s discipline faced challenges.

“Hon. Haruna Maigari is hereby suspended as Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council over alleged anti-party activities,” Dangyatin declared during the meeting.

The Speaker added that the House is dedicated to maintaining party discipline at all levels in the state. Dangyatin also set up a committee to investigate the matter and report back within two weeks.

“The committee is expected to establish facts and recommend further action based on its findings,” he explained.

The Speaker instructed the suspended lawmaker to hand over all official documents he has to the Deputy Speaker of Auyo Legislative Council. He said this handover must happen immediately to keep council business running smoothly.

In another development, the House received an official notice from Governor Umar Namadi about an upcoming trip.

“The governor is set to attend a two-day West African Rice Investment Roundtable in Accra, Ghana,” the Speaker shared during the Assembly meeting.

Dangyatin explained that the governor’s foreign trip will take place from June 2 to June 3, 2026. He added, “The governor’s participation is aimed at attracting investment to Jigawa’s rice value chain.”
