The Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) has chosen Usman Ahmed as its new National President. This decision came during the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the NSP Unity Conference 2026 in Kano State. Along with Ahmed, ten other executive officers were elected.

The conference lasted a week, from 25 to 31 October 2026. It brought together over 1,000 physiotherapists, researchers, academics, students, and healthcare workers from all over Nigeria. They gathered to discuss professional growth and unity in the field.

Ahmed’s election is an important change in leadership for the Society. As National President, he will guide the National Executive Council. He will also represent physiotherapy in discussions with regulatory agencies, government bodies, and other healthcare institutions.

Ahmed steps into this role at a key time for physiotherapy in Nigeria. The profession is becoming more essential in areas like rehabilitation, managing chronic diseases, and preventing disabilities.

New Council's Focus

The new council has several important goals. They want to support members’ welfare, boost clinical research, and push for better integration of physiotherapy services in the national health system.

The 2026, 2028 National Executive Council includes:

  • Dr Usman Abba Ahmed, National President
  • Dr Chioma Lynda Onochukwu, Vice President
  • Dr Olusegun Adejare, General Secretary
  • Dr Jibril S. Idris, Assistant General Secretary
  • Dr Joseph Olamide Samuel, National Treasurer
  • Dr Auwal Shittu, Financial Secretary

  • Dr Saminu Ali Muhammad, Assistant National PRO I
  • Dr Olusola Awoniyi, Assistant National PRO II
  • Dr Ahule Tubokenimi, Auditor I
  • Dr Babatunde Ileyemi, Auditor II
Aside from the elections, the conference featured clinical sessions, special workshops, and discussions on modern rehabilitation practices.

A highlight of this year's event was the first Early Career Physiotherapists Congress and Seminar. This event attracted over 250 practitioners who are within their first ten years after graduation.

The forum provided mentorship, leadership training, and opportunities to connect with key figures in the field. Notable attendees included Professor Rufa’i Yusuf Ahmad, who is the Registrar of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria (MRTBN).
