The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has named Lawan Muhammad-Sani as the new Emir of Gumel. He is the 17th person to hold this position.

Lawan Muhammad-Sani takes over from his late father, Ahmed Muhammad-Sani. Ahmed passed away on Thursday, 3 September, after ruling for 46 years.

The news was shared in a formal statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim.

The state government said that Governor Namadi made the appointment based on recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council Kingmakers. This council is led by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Nasoro, and includes the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs. The council has the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim, and Dutse.

Before becoming emir, Lawan Muhammad-Sani held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel. He also worked as the Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Governor Namadi praised the kingmakers and the council of chiefs for their help during the selection. He wished the new emir a peaceful, successful, and impactful reign for both the Gumel Emirate and the country.
