The Kaduna Polo Club is set to host the second Dawule Baba Memorial Polo Tournament. This event honors one of Nigeria’s great polo figures, Dawule Baba, who died last year in Egypt.
Dawule Baba was known as the “Polo Professor.” He passed away at 66 years old. Before he died, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Kaduna Polo Club. He was a respected figure in the sport, both in Nigeria and internationally.
The tournament will take place over four days, from June 11 to 14, 2026. It will be held at the polo grounds of Murtala Mohammed Square in Kaduna. Teams will compete in different categories: high-goal, medium-goal, and low-goal. There will also be the Clearwater Youth Challenge, a Beginners’ category, and Veterans’ games for players who played alongside the late polo legend.
The Tournament Committee released a statement about the event. It aims to celebrate the lasting legacies of Dawule Baba. He was widely respected for his contributions to the club and the growth of polo in Nigeria.
The statement said, “His invaluable commitment and contribution to the greatness of the club and development of the noble game in Kaduna, across the country and globally, cannot be quantified.”
Organizers mentioned that while the tournament will focus on Kaduna teams and players, clubs from across Nigeria are welcome to participate. They expect more than 14 teams to compete for the title.
The statement also emphasized, “In honor of a legend, the four days polo fiesta is open to everyone: polo patrons, players, teams, and polo fans who wish to join us in prayers, polo, and remembrance for Dawule Baba, The Teacher.”
General Kapeh Kazir, the First Vice President of Kaduna Polo Club and Chairman of Clearwater Polo Farm, spoke about the late polo ambassador. He said that his contributions should be honored and remembered for the future.
“Teacher, who was part of our team, often gave us technical advice and encouragement even before he passed on. By sponsoring the Clearwater Beginners Cup and the Clearwater Youth Challenge Cup, we are preserving his legacies of training, mentoring, and encouragement of upcoming players, among others.”
The first edition of the memorial tournament featured the unveiling of the Dawule Baba Polo Field, a lasting tribute to the Nigerian polo ambassador.
